Born John Francis Anthony Pastorius III on December 1, 1951, in Norristown, Pennsylvania, Jaco grew up in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He began his musical career on drums before switching to the electric bass in his teens. He developed a unique and virtuosic playing style, often playing fretless bass, which gave his sound a distinct melodic quality. His self-titled debut solo album in 1976 established him as a major force in the music world. That same year, he joined the pioneering jazz fusion band Weather Report, where he contributed to some of their most celebrated albums, including Heavy Weather. Pastorius also collaborated with artists like Joni Mitchell and Ian Hunter and released several solo albums. His life and career were cut short when he died in 1987 at the age of 35 after sustaining injuries in an altercation. He left behind a legacy that has influenced countless musicians across various genres.
